Andrew Burne, New Zealand rugby player was banned at the end of 2015 for 6 years due to steroids abuse. He was a Hawke’s Bay boy, born and raised on stories of the region’s rugby greats. When he was young, he used to play for his school, age-grade representative and eventually into club rugby. The reason that he started to consume steroid is that he wanted to grow bigger. During the off season, he would go to the gym and noticed that the bodybuilders were able to put on muscle and lose it with ease. So, he started researching steroids and soon got enough courage to start asking for them. After that, he gave it a try and but did not notice if it was legal. After 10 months of using Dianabol, he successfully gained about 10kg of muscle and he ended up with about 108kg which made him happy.

In September 2013, the police raided Burne’s house and they found 4 bottles of Dianabol, charging him with 3 offences under the Medicines Act. Burne was discharged without conviction. Then, Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) took the case to the New Zealand Rugby’s judicial committee after interviewing Burne at the end of 2015. He admitted 3 violations relating to use of a prohibited substances, including trafficking as he had sold some of his steroids to others. In the end, the committee settled on a six-year ban.

Tyson Gay, 30, America, who has a personal best of 9.69 secs for 100m and 19.58 secs for 200m, has also won a number of world class medals, which are Olympics: 4x100m relay- silver (2012), World Championships: 100m- gold (2007), silver (2009), 200m- gold (2007), 4x100m relay- gold (2007).The BBC has obtained extracts of a letter sent to Gay by the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) which outlines the nature of the substance traced in a sample he gave to drug testers during the US World Championship trials in June.

The letter, dated 23 July, states: “Using the Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis it reported that the sample had an adverse analytical finding reflecting values that are consistent with the administration of a steroid of exogenous [external] nature.”

The letter goes on to say that a positive test for an “anabolic agent” of this kind would – if proven – be a violation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code. Under the WADA code, he was found guilty of taking a prohibited steroid and was banned for 2 years.
