As humans are creatures that are competitive in their natural habitat, it was only a matter of time for the performance enhancement substance known as steroids to be created and used.

The earliest case of steroid usage can be recorded in the year 1860, where  Dutch swimmers from Amsterdam were caught using drugs to increase their speed during races.

Down the road of world history, upon success of male hormone testosterone synthesization in 1935, it was reported that German soldiers were administered testosterone for increased aggression and performance during World War 2.

Once the World Wars were done and dusted, athletes began using testosterone in pushing their limits and edging their rivals. In the 1952 Olympics, Soviet wrestlers in particular performed exceptionally and caught the attention of Dr. John Bosley Ziegler who then innovated and created anabolic steroids.

From that point onwards until the early 1970’s, anabolic steroids were widely used by professional and casual athletes and bodybuilders until being banned for competitive usage in 1975 by the International Olympic Committee. However, illicit sales of steroids have still prevailed to this day.
